St. George Island

With the exception of Mashes Sands Beach in Panacea, there isn’t a ton of sandy shores for you to lay around by on Florida’s Forgotten Coast. However, there is one major exception to this: St. George Island. Only an hour’s drive from our cute motel, you can take a day trip out to one of the most beautiful sections in our quiet part of Florida.

Things to Do in St. George Island

The majority of visitors to St. George are focused on the local attractions—especially the beaches. Here are some activities you might be interested in before you arrive!

Beaches

The entire southern shoreline of St. George Island is one paradise of a beach! All you need to do is drive here, park in one of the many free parking spots for beach guests, and find a place to lay your stuff! The water is calming, warm, and amazing for a swim.

Are the Beaches Dog-Friendly?

Yes, of course, they are! Just make sure to pick up after your dog. Keep them on a leash as well!

Can You Start a Fire on the Beach?

You can start a campfire in any of the designated campfire areas. Make sure to clean up after yourself and that the fires are put out before you go.

Beach Rental

What if you don’t just want to get out in the water and swim, but you want to experience the ocean in new ways? Well, it looks like you’ll have to check out some of the local watersports rental shops to see what they offer!

What is it?

Island Outfitters offers a bunch of water sports equipment if you are hoping to get into the ocean water in style! You have a choice between a series of kayaks, paddleboards, surfboards, and even fishing carts. We recommend them as the top rental place near the beaches.

Hop in a private charter and have a guide take you to some of the best fishing spots in America. While we could name a dozen or so fishing charters, there are too many good ones to choose from.

You can go fishing for moderately-sized fish like redfish or flounder, or you can try and Jaws your way to success by going shark fishing!

Another one of our favorite things to do is visit the Journeys of St. George Island. This isn’t just another fishing charter or kayak rental place! You can go on a sunset cruise on a boat with a tour guide, see dolphins, explore the surrounding islands, and much more!

If you need some time to get your land legs back after a day at the beach, the St. George Lighthouse is a great place to do so. Tour the historical areas to learn about the beacon, and climb it for an impressive experience and view of the island and beaches.

Apalachicola

While not part of St. George Island, Apalachicola is definitely worth a visit while you are in the neighborhood. As you drive down the Big Bed Scenic Byway, you’ll find an unassuming town with tons of fun history, tons of shops, and a great culinary scene. 5/5 stars! We highly recommend it.

Hopefully, you have found some attractions that look fun and exciting to you. After your long day trip, you can drive back to the Panacea Motel for rest in preparation for your next adventure. We are looking forward to it!
